Lam Li a website editor who has a considerable travel experience along the modern Silk Road with particular interest in Minqin County. The region was formerly a desert oasis, now almost swallowed by yearly sandstorms. Li relates her story of the geography, local culture, local customs and life in Minqin County.

In northwestern Xinjiang lies the largest desert in all of China. The Uighurs call it Taklamakan. According to one urban legend they tell tourists, the word "taklamakan" means "go in and you'll never leave."

That fake story has ended up sticking. To this day, few people cross the desert without making sure they know the next oasis town. In ancient times, the Silk Road split in two so that traders could go around the desert on either side. Even then, few people dared the 250-mile journey straight across.
