Iran Sanction Reaction

At the United Nations in New York the Security Council appears to have reached a consensus over US-led draft sanctions on Iran over its controversial nuclear program. And crucially that agreement includes permanent members Russia and China – who have previously balked at signing up for sanctions.

The announcement came just a day after Brazil and Turkey worked out a fuel swap deal with Iran which the government in Tehran felt could be a step toward ending its years-old standoff with the West.

Iran Sanctions: Chinese Reaction

World powers slapped a fourth set of UN sanctions on Iran with widening military and financial restrictions in a continued effort to solve the Iranian nuclear standoff. The vote in the 15-member UN Security Council was in favor of the US-drafted resolution, with Lebanon abstaining and Brazil and Turkey voting against.

The Obama administration says the new economic sanctions against Iran adopted by the UN Security Council are the toughest ever against that country's military and financial interests. The resolution imposes binding new restrictions on Iran's import of conventional arms. States are prohibited from selling to Iran eight categories of heavy weapons, including battle tanks, attack helicopters, and missile systems.
Nuclear Ties With France

France's EDF, or Electricite de France, will have a 30 percent stake in the plant it's building with China in Taishan in Guangdong province. And the deal will include technology transfers long sought by China.

The deal has taken 20 years of planning, and China's state media says the plant is expected to be one of the world's largest nuclear power projects. France's Prime Minister, Francois Fillon, attended a signing ceremony in Beijing.
Hot Topics For 2010

As the world looks forward to 2010 many will be hoping that this year will see a definitive emergence from the financial crisis of the past 12 months. And with the New Year, new political issues are emerging. Not least of these is China's growing confidence on the world stage - and particularly its relationship with the US.

US based Foreign Policy Magazine recently carried a report on the world political climate in 2010 in which it listed key issues for the coming year. Amongst these were Sino-US relations; the Iran nuclear issue; Europe's financial pressures; regulation of the US financial system; and global warming.

Now on the back of that report a poll carried out here in China by the website ifeng.com asked respondents which of these five topics they thought would be the biggest political issue of 2010?
