Is China Still A Developing Country?

China’s development over the past 30 years has been spectacular by any standards and, both politically and economically, the country has been playing an increasingly significant role on the global stage. This has sparked off the debate on whether China is really still a developing country or not.
A recent editorial in the government run People’s Daily argued that despite huge advances China most definitely still is a developing country - especially when per capita figures for GDP, public spending, and income are taken into account. This sparked a lot of reaction form Chinese net users – we cross over now to the news room where our researcher Julia Liu has been following the discussion.
