Three government departments in China including the National Bureau of Statistics jointly rolled out a massive, nationwide investigation of statistical figures.

The investigation mainly targets key figures including GDP, industrial production, and urban and suburban residents' income by examining the data collection processes, methods applied to the data and data quality.

Violations of rules on statistics found during the investigation will be dealt with toughly, preventing false statistics.

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has pushed for an investigation into whether Chinese investment in the U.S. steel sector should be blocked on national security grounds.

China has about 400 million web users, by far the largest in the world.  This has also given rise to a strong internet culture that is very particular to this country.  One of the most peculiar aspects of this culture is what's known as wangluo hongren, which roughly translates as "internet celebrities". 

These are usually people who have become famous online for no fathomable reason.  Of course, this phenomenon is by no means confined to China, but just by the power of sheer numbers, anyone who does capture web users' imaginations here can become very famous, very quickly. 

Most net users say the killer deserves sympathy. They say it must be difficult for the villagers to find a legal way to penalize the local official and that's what drove the villager who hired Zhang to take such extreme measures.

Some say he is a hero for defending people's interests and say he shouldn't be punished. Other people say the court and police should listen to the people and carry out further investigations into this case.

They say the fact that there are so many people speaking up for the killer, suggests there is more to this case. Some are also calling for other officials who covered up the wrong-doings of their murdered colleague to be punished.

Other commentators take a different line, saying that Zhang is too young to be executed. There are calls for his mother to be held responsible instead.
