Pressure On Three Gorges
Jul 24, 2010
Summer rains have spelled misery for China this year, particularly in the south. The worst flooding for more than a decade has claimed at least 146 lives in China since the start of the month, and the two-year-old dam – the world's largest – is being used to minimize further devastation. Earlier this month, the massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in Hubei opened its floodgates for the first time this year to release backed up water. At meantime, Jiangxi, Hunan and Hubei provinces were experiencing heavy rainstorm. The release of water from the Dam has lead the water level of rivers in these areas rising fast. This was considered a dangerous action to the lower region.
