At the United Nations in New York the Security Council appears to have reached a consensus over US-led draft sanctions on Iran over its controversial nuclear program. And crucially that agreement includes permanent members Russia and China – who have previously balked at signing up for sanctions.

The announcement came just a day after Brazil and Turkey worked out a fuel swap deal with Iran which the government in Tehran felt could be a step toward ending its years-old standoff with the West.

Some people are reacting to the news with a lot of excitement, saying that they support the Iranians fighting for their freedom and saying that the Iranians deserve a better government.

Some have said that an autocracy will eventually lead to unrest so they are expecting to see a revolution spread across Iran.

Others say that it’s not good that the protesters are causing chaos when the country is facing a lot of difficulties – as well as what they call international enemies. They say the protests will only cause more problems for the country. 

The decision by the Obama Administration to go ahead with a $6.4bn arms sale to Taiwan has certainly infuriated the Chinese government. Although the F-16 fighters - which Taiwan's military wanted - were dropped from the final package, it still includes advanced helicopters, air defense missiles, minesweepers and military communications equipment.

China has called the deal a "gross interference in its internal affairs" and has already suspended military exchanges between the two countries in retaliation. In addition there have been calls in government run mediafor sanctions against US companies involved in the deal.

For its part Washington says that China's increased defense spending means U.S. arms sales to Taiwan are necessary to maintain a military balance. The move is the culmination of a spike in Sino-US tensions since last year's meeting between Presidents Barack Obama and Hu Jintao.

The two clashed over the Copenhagen Climate Negotiations, and more recently over internet freedom, cyber attacks and how to deal with Iran.
