Fast Food Sleepover

Jun 9, 2010
We've reported here on Beyond the Headlines on China's growing love affair with fast food chains, with hundreds of McDonalds and KFC restaurants opening all over the country. We’ve talked about how it's changing people's lifestyles here, from their eating habits to their health.

But there's another, more unusual consequence of this fast food craze – growing numbers of people who have started to live in these chain restaurants. Many of the McDonalds and KFC branches here stay open 24 hours. And that’s seen everyone from migrant workers to cash-strapped students using them as a place to sleep.

A report in The Southern Weekly newspaper here says that in winter people even bring sleeping mats and blankets into the restaurants. The case of these McRefugees – as they are being called – was thrown into the spotlight earlier this year, when one man stabbed a McDonalds employee who tried to kick him out. People asked if was something that should be allowed to continue. And that's a question we put to people in today's Straight from the Street.
