Student Detained as Terrorist

May 26, 2010

Now to the arrest of a Chinese graduate student in New York, after he allegedly threatened his teacher - and the school he was studying at. Zhai Tiantian, is from the central city of Xi'an and had been in the US since 2003. He was arrested on April 16th, the day after he argued with a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.

A classmate said it was a verbal dispute over his academic scores and Zhai allegedly said he would do whatever he could to get revenge. The professor later called the campus police who arrested Zhai and turned him over to the New Jersey police.

He's currently being held in jail and is unable to raise the $20,000 bail. The college canceled his student visa immediately and US immigration officials have issued an arrest warrant and a deportation order.

According to the indictment Zhai threatened to set fire to the campus and was considered a "terrorist threat." Through his lawyer Zhai has denied he tried to start a fire.

Zhai's predicament has been at the center of a lot of comment online and to discuss the case we cross over to the newsroom now and our researcher Quincy Hsiao.
