According to the United Nations, 51 countries, territories and areas currently impose some form of travel restriction on people living with HIV/AIDS. Recently, China announced its lifting of its entry ban on foreign carriers of the virus.

China's recent decision to allow HIV positive people work visas has been hailed by health organizations as a major step forward.

But healthcare advocates say it's just one step along a long road towards better recognition of the disease in China.

In today's special report, Andrew Livingstone looks at the state of AIDS treatment and education in China.

The message is clear: China is serious about kicking the habit.  The Ministry of Health recently announced that by 2011, smoking is to be banned in all public venues, workplaces and on public transportation. It also vowed to ban smoking in all its offices by September and ordered all hospitals to go smoke-free by next year.

To drive the message home, ministry employees will also no longer be allowed to give cigarettes as gifts- a common tradition in Chinese business culture.

And the ministry itself is taking the first step.

In China, measures to tackle HIV/AIDS had always been decided by government leaders- with little regard for input from civil society. But recently China's fight against the disease has taken what experts are calling a historic turn. BON's Kelda Yuen has more on the country's new forum that will- for the first time- provide activists and people living with HIV/AIDS to be heard by the country's top policy makers.
