Now staying with the issue of body and organ donations: a local official in the city of Shenzhen has suggested that driving licenses in the city be modified to indicate whether or not the holder is willing to donate organs after his or her death. The official, Li Jiasheng recommended adding the information on the issue of new or renewed driving licenses.

He pointed out that each year around 800 to 900 people die in traffic accidents in Shenzhen alone - of which about one in ten is a driver. He said that while around 5,000 people in the city have registered to donate organs, most of these are patients suffering from terminal disease and in many cases the organs are not suitable.

Li says that in any case far more than this small number of organs are needed for both transplants and medical and scientific research.

A Tianjin couple's decision to withdraw medical treatment for their newborn baby, who suffers life-threatening birth defects, has triggered outcry here in China. The story first came to light at the end of January, after the family of the infant transferred her to a hospice in the city.

The baby, who suffers from a number of serious medical conditions including an imperforate anus, blocked urinary tract, and heart disease, was initially treated in hospital.

However the family decided to stop treatment after 13 days saying that, as the baby's condition was hopeless and the treatment extremely painful, they wanted to let her die with dignity.

A Chinese graduate of Yale University from China has donated 8,888,888 dollars to the college. The Yale Daily News says Zhang Lei, a successful investor who graduated from the Yale School of Management in 2002, made the donation to help build a new campus for the business school.

It was revealed by university president Richard Levin at a conference in Beijing last week. And if you're wondering why he chose such an unusual amount to donate – 8,888,888 – well, eight is of course considered a lucky number in Chinese culture.
