Should Dog And Cat Meat Be Banned?

Feb 2, 2010
As we reported here on Wednesday, a draft anti-animal abuse law being drawn up here could result in fines and even jail time for anyone caught eating cats and dogs. The draft law stipulates that people who eat cats and dogs could be fined more than 700 dollars or jailed for up to 15 days.

Restaurants found offering cats and dogs on the menu face fines of more than 70,000 dollars. Supporters of the law say it would help break down trade barriers imposed on China's animal products, such as leather and fur. That's because some Western countries ban imports of Chinese animal products, citing inhumane treatment of animals in the country.

Cat and dog lovers are of course supporting the draft law. But plenty of people aren't happy about this proposed law - eating cats and dogs has been a tradition in some parts of China for thousands of years.
