China flew a military medical team to quake-hit Haiti at the weekend amid rising fears of an outbreak of epidemic diseases on the island.
The 40-member medical and epidemic-control team will replace China's 50-member search and rescue team. Chinese rescuers were amongst the first to arrive in Haiti's devastated capital, Port-au-Prince after the quake.
They are joined by four Chinese peacekeeping police officers to replace four who were killed in the earthquake. China has 125 peacekeepers stationed in Haiti as part of the United Nations stabilization force in the country.
The Chinese rescue team discovered the body of Hedi Annabi, chief of the United Nations Stabilization Force in Haiti, amongst the debris of the UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince.
It's believed Annabi was meeting with a high-ranking delegation from China when the earthquake struck. The bodies of eight Chinese nationals - four peacekeepers and four from a visiting delegation – have also been recovered.
Annabi, the special representative of the UN General-Secretary in Haiti was from Tunisia. Chinese and Brazilian international rescue teams worked together in the rubble to look for Annabi. His remains were put on a stretcher and officially handed over to UN officials.
The leader of the Chinese rescue team said all personal effects found in the rubble were sealed were also sealed and handed over to UN officials.
Earlier the same two teams uncovered the body of Brazilian Luiz Da Costa, Deputy Special Representative of the UN General-Secretary in Haiti, the UN mission's second-in command.
