Super Tanker To Aircraft Carrier

The scheduled maiden voyage later this month of a Chinese-made supertanker has reignited debate over whether or not China's navy should possess an aircraft carrier. The mammoth "Xin Buyang" oil-tanker is currently being prepared to take to the sea at a shipyard near the southern city of Guangzhou.

Displacing 350,000 tons - more than three times as much as the biggest American aircraft carrier - the supertanker is well over 1,000 feet long and has a deck the size of three football fields.

The ship's makers say it's built to withstand the worst weather and can circumnavigate the globe in just 60 days. It is also certified to operate without a pilot in many ports due to its advanced automatic navigational and control systems.

For supporters of a Chinese aircraft carrier the fact that such an advanced ship - and of such scale - can be built with indigenous Chinese technology is a signal the country is also capable of building and launching its own aircraft carrier.

Super-Sized Tanker

The largest oil tanker ever constructed by a Chinese shipyard debuted in Guangzhou, Southern China on Friday. The ship symbolizes a benchmark for the countries shipyards, that have, up until now, only been able to build smaller tankers.

Named Xin Pu Yang, the tanker boasts a capacity of more than 300,000 gross tons and has the deck space of four football fields.

The vessel is 333-meters-long and 60-meters-wide with a service speed of 30 kilometers an hour and a range of 20,000 nautical miles.The tanker is mostly automated and only requires 24 crew members.

Military Exercise Sparks Anger

China says it is concerned about reports that a U.S. aircraft carrier may join a military exercise with South Korea amid a tense standoff with North Korea over the sinking of a warship from the South.

The South Korean corvette the Cheonan was sunk off the peninsula's west coast in March, killing 46 sailors. South Korea has blamed the North for sinking the Cheonan with a torpedo fired from a submarine, a charge the North denies.

The United States and South Korea have since said they will hold a joint anti-submarine drill.

China's aviation sector continues to grow, and with it the demand for commercial aircraft. New initiatives in the industry mean domestically produced planes are set to become a more common sight in airline fleets in the coming decades.

And to feed that demand, a new aircraft production base is now under construction in the city of Shanghai.

The new Shanghai civil aircraft assembly plant will be producing domestically designed and constructed aircraft within three years. That's according to COMAC - Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China - which is in charge of the domestic C919 passenger and ARJ 21 airplane programs.

It's announced construction work has already started near Pudong International Airport on what will be China's largest such facility. The first completed aircraft is expected to roll off the assembly line by 2012.
China's Foreign Policy Thinking

This week's big joint US-South Korean naval exercises in the Sea of Japan have made China uneasy because of their geographical proximity to the mainland. The manoeuvres involve an aircraft carrier and 200 aircraft, and are being staged in response to the sinking of a South Korean warship in March. South Korea and the US believe North Korea torpedoed the Cheonan warship and say their joint naval drill is intended to deter North Korea from undertaking military action against the South.
