Now this week saw Chinese lovers celebrating the festival known here as Qixi (CHEESHEE) and often considered Chinese culture’s equivalent of Valentine’s Day. The festival falls on the 7th day of the 7th month in the Chinese lunar calendar - and like all such tales concerns a pair of star crossed lovers - in this case literally… BON’s Katie Fischer reports.

Traditional Chinese culture has a lot of differences from western culture, so personally I don’t think gay marriage can be permitted by our law. Maybe Americans can accept gay marriage, but we Chinese have quite a solid traditional culture which tells us men and women are very different. I can’t even imagine what would happen if gay marriage were permitted in China. It might be permitted by Chinese law in the future, but there would be a lot of controversy.

As in much of the rest of the western world, Christmas decorations started appearing in Beijing several weeks ago. Chinese website huanqiu.com reports the Christmas spirit in China is growing stronger every year, gaining ground on the traditional Chinese Spring Festival.

Recent media reports claim that China's younger generation increasingly looks forward to Christmas, and that, as a result, anticipation for the Spring Festival is somewhat more subdued.

Huanqiu conducted a poll asking Chinese net users if they thought Christmas net users can steal the spotlight from the Spring Festival. Just 20 percent said yes, while 80 percent said no.

Considered an alternative medical system in much of the Western world, in China, Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is a valuable cultural treasure for over one billion people. While it attracts increasing attention in western countries, in China fierce debate over its legal existence has been raging on for over one hundred years. With thousands of years of history and a variety of almost magical treatment methods such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, cupping and Tuina massage, TCM has never been without its side in western eyes. That's not to say however that doubts surrounding its efficacy and safety, as well as longstanding confusion over its development in China don't exist. Such uncertainty has resulted in a new wave of debate over whether to preserve or abolish this living symbol of Chinese culture.

The Traditional Chinese Lunar calendar is not just a timeline of dates – it’s also a virtual ‘bible’ of fortune telling. Armed with just date and time of birth, a trained fortune teller can supposedly tell almost everything about you – and your future. It might be surprising in this 21st century, rapidly modernizing country that superstition is still rife – but it has been an essential part of Chinese culture for centuries. And, as in the western world, some of the better known fortune tellers make a handsome living. So what do ordinary people really think about this topic? Well we went out on the streets of Beijing to find out. Here’s what they had to say.
