The deadly A/H1N1 strain of flu sparked nationwide concern as it spread rapidly across the country. Officials remain anxious to contain the spread of this illness, which has so far killed over 730. people in China. Efforts to halt the spread of H1N1 are robust here in China, but as Halla Mohieddeen now reports, new research findings now suggest that residents in Hong Kong at least, may be developing a natural immunization.

China is among the first countries to mass produce H1N1 flu vaccines. But the question is - how safe are they?

Well, a recent survey shows that more than half the Chinese population don’t plan to get the flu shots. In today’s BON feature ,we take an in-depth look at the vaccine’s safety risks, and find out what people here in China think about it.

China remains in the grip of some of the fiercest winter weather in recent times. As towns and municipalities continue efforts to clear the snow, and keep warm, concerns remain high that the sharp drops in temperatures will fuel another spike in numbers of H1N1 flu cases.

Authorities in Eastern China's Shandong province announced a further 10 deaths from H1N1 flu last week, bringing the province's total number of deaths to 45. Shandong's health authorities confirmed that a total of 177 new cases of H1N1 were reported in late December, 27 of which were serious.

But the Chinese Ministry of Health has said that overall the number of new H1N1 cases on the Chinese mainland is declining. Under 3000 cases were reported in a briefing last week, down from more than 4000 the previous week.

Officials also note that H1N1 cases accounted for a smaller portion of flu cases, down to fewer than 70 percent of cases from nearly 80 percent the previous week.

But officials are anxious to contain the threat of H1N1 flu, particularly in the run up to Chinese New Year – when large parts of the population travel across the country, increasing the risk of spreading the virus. The Ministry for Health continues to urge vulnerable people, and pregnant women to come forward for immunization.
