Mobile Booths To Ease Rail Pressure

To help relieve the pressure on ticket booths in its main rail station in the run up to this Spring Festival, the city of Xiamen in southeastern China is setting up mobile booths around the city. Lu Daofeng, deputy head of Xiamen Railway Station, says the mobile ticket booths - which are amongst the most advanced in the country - are just one measure adopted by the station to cope with ticket sales during the peak travel season.

The arrival of the Spring Festival – the Chinese New Year - means movement of people on a massive scale as virtually the entire country tries to return home for the holiday. And much of that travel will be by rail - which means opportunities for unscrupulous ticket scalpers.

This year over 210 million people are expected to use China's railways. That means hugely overcrowded trains, lining up – sometimes for days - to buy scarce tickets,and unscrupulous scalpers.

This year the country's Ministry of Railways has announced a pilot project – known as the, "real name ticket system". It aims to deal with the scourge of those who buy up tickets then sell them at inflated prices. At 37 stations in the southern provinces of Guangdong, Hunan and Sichuan each passenger will be allowed to buy just three tickets after providing one piece of ID per ticket. Many travelers like the idea.
No Cell Phones For Kids?

Over the past 18 months authorities in China have launched a string of crackdowns on what it calls "pornographic and lewd" content. Last year alone more than 15,000 pornographic websites, including more than 11,000 mobile WAP sites, were shut down or blocked.

Now a number of Chinese educationalists have gone further and suggested that children under 12 years old should be prevented by law from using mobile phones to protect them from the influence of pornography. More than 230 million of China's net users now use mobile Internet applications - around 60% of all web users. And of these nearly three-quarters are aged 10 to 29.
